Last Sunday Evening (November 26th 2017), as a Welcome to re:INVENT, 3500 lucky AWS fans were invited to Amazon's Midnight Madness event at The Venetian hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada.
During this event Amazon announced a new product called Amazon Sumerian which is a new service aimed at Developers needing to implement Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR) and 3D applications.
Amazon Sumerian provides an editor and drag and drop interface allowing developers to easily build virtual environments using 3D objects and animated characters and script how they interact with each other and the application's clients. Sumerian applications can be executed in any internet browser that supports WebGL or WebVR graphics rendering.
The primary objective of Amazon Sumerian is to provide a platform model to easily create VR, AR and 3D experiences and ensure these experiences easily deploy and run on the major platforms such as Ocolus Rift, HTC Vive and iOS mobile devices. Previously this required developers to implement unique specifications and deployment processes for each of the major hardware providers.
What's also great about Amazon Sumerian is you require no additional software or upfront costs to get started. All assets are stored on the AWS cloud platform so customers only pay for the storage and bandwidth they use.
